RAGBRAI XLIX Day 6 (Friday, July 29) – West Union – 53.2 miles (395 miles total) – We arrived in West Union ahead of the crowd thanks in part to Natalie’s continued insistence about starting our day at 4:00 AM. On the road by 5:30 AM and we beat the heat and wind and crowds along this route that took me back to a region of Iowa where I grew up. It’s been years since I’ve been in this part of the state and I enjoyed biking through all the familiar towns and viewing them as an adult. We got into West Union and due to its size, our phones were completely isolated from the outside world due to the influx of nearly 20,000 people for the overnight. No Internet and no texting. I LOVED IT! While downtown, I even met some fellow ham radio operators and got a chance to get a picture with them and their command center. It was a geeky moment that I relished for sure!
