Zach was on his way to visit Dad for the weekend, but unfortunately was plagued with a flat tire and then a blow out of his spare. What an evening! After a nice tow truck ride to Dickeyville, WI., he is now enjoying a Norman Bates styled motel! Lovely! I also learned from searching up Dickeyville last night that they are the proud home of The Dickeyville Grotto.
About twenty miles north of Dubuque, the village of Dickeyville is where in 1925, Father Mathias Wernerus, the pastor of the Holy Ghost Catholic Parish began work on what has come to be known as the Dickeyville Grotto. The grotto is constructed of bits and pieces of seashells, costume jewelry and glass and includes a small cave, statues, and fountains. There are six shrines and a “Stations of the Cross.” There are two main themes – religion and patriotism. Unfortunately, it’s open to visitors April through October so Zach won’t get to visit it during his brief stay.
