As I prepare to watch a Pedro Almodovar movie, I get a phone call that a tornado is heading towards Steinthal. I sit in my bedroom with the boys, watching WBAY Storm Alert as a tornado barrels our way bringing 70 MPH winds, mentally extrapolating the path of the twister to determine whether or not we are going to be hit. The situation escalates as we see that a tornado warning has just been issued for Manitowoc County. Watching the live radar with the red swirleys spinning on the map towards our location creates unease (and a little excitement for the boys… ). What a fitting end to the first weekend of what finally feels like spring up here. To think I was plowing snow off my drive only two short weeks ago! And today, I finally turn off my furnace, refusing to turn it on until this fall, regardless of what the temperatures dip to! I opened the house up after cleaning and installing a whopping 42 window screens back in their respective homes.
After spending Saturday afternoon watching the Green Bay Dragons put the Lawrence University hockey team in their place, the evening was eventful in which I had the honor of listening to the Sweet Adelines Interational Singers who congregated in Appleton for a regional competition. Sweet Adelines International is a highly respected worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. We were fortunate to hear the entire group of competitors sing in a public venue at the Appleton Radisson. It was truely awe inspiring! CLICK HERE FOR A SONG.
Then it was off to the Mill Creek Pub for an evening of live music with a fantastic local band Greg Waters and the Broad Street Boogie
.
With influences ranging from Ben Harper to Stevie Wonder to Paul Simon to The Allman Brothers, Greg Waters and The Broad Street Boogie has a diverse roots-retro vibe that is extremely contagious! I even learned the difference between cappuccino and latte after an intense and animated 30 minute debate!
All clear with the tornado. No damage here. Almodovar will have to wait for another evening. Subtitles make it a challenge while typing. Forgot it was in Spanish….
