I am finally able to release a few of the early RAGBRAI LI videos filmed earlier this year.
EPISODE 54 – Welcome to our journey across the beautiful state of Iowa, where we join thousands of cyclists on the iconic ride known as RAGBRAI. The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, is the world’s oldest, largest, and longest recreational bicycle touring event. RAGBRAI’s story begins in 1973 when two intrepid newspaper columnists, John Karras and Donald Kaul of the Des Moines Register, decided to embark on a cross-state bike ride. What started as a personal challenge quickly gained attention, and they invited the public to join them. To their surprise, around 300 cyclists showed up, marking the humble beginnings of what would become a legendary annual event. Every year since then, RAGBRAI has brought together cyclists of all ages and abilities to traverse roughly 400 to 500 miles over the course of a week, from the Missouri River on the western edge of Iowa to the Mississippi River on the eastern edge. This ride is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the breathtaking landscapes of Iowa. From its early days with a few hundred riders to today’s event, which attracts over 10,000 participants, RAGBRAI has become a beloved tradition. It showcases the spirit of adventure and camaraderie, embodying the essence of riding together. Join us as we explore RAGBRAI LI (51), where the journey is as important as the destination.
RAGBRAI LI, or the 51st edition of the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is set to take place from July 21-27, 2024. This week-long event involves over 20,000 cyclists from across the U.S. and the world riding approximately 434 miles across the state of Iowa. This year’s route is notable for being one of the hilliest ever, with 18,375 feet of elevation gain. The ride spans from Glenwood to Burlington, passing through several towns such as Red Oak, Atlantic, Winterset, Knoxville, Ottumwa, and Mt. Pleasant. Each day features different themes and options, such as gravel routes and a century loop, offering riders varying levels of challenge. In addition to the scenic ride, riders experience local hospitality from 35 communities and enjoy various events in the overnight towns. RAGBRAI is well-known not just for its cycling but also for its social and cultural significance in Iowa. Special Thanks to Brancel Bicycle Charters (https://www.brancelcharters.com) for everything they did to make this another great RAGBRAI experience!
