Friday was Arbor Day and a day to celebrate the planting of trees. Arbor Day was first Julius Sterling Morton in Nebraska on April 22, 1872. Later, Morton served as President Grover’s Secretary of Agriculture. While we have an Eastern Red Cedar to plant, we are going to wait a few more days until we are certain of warmer weather here at Steinthal. In the meantime, we were contemplating working the soil on a slightly larger scale and decided on a whim to attend a local farm auction in which antique Farmall tractors were being sold. Unfortunately, the tractors were also highly sought by much more seasoned and knowledgeable farmers that collected them. Regardless, it was a beautiful day and an entertaining experience.
