A Week in Door County on Take Five

A Week in Door County on Take Five

This past week, we slipped away to one of our favorite places—Door County—spending time aboard our boat, Take Five. It was a much-needed break, even if the weather initially tested our patience. That’s all part of boating life, though: you take the waves as they come, and enjoy the calm when it arrives.

Early in the week, Natalie’s brother Brett joined us with his two children. We had a great time anchoring out in the bay, soaking in the views, and exploring some of the local sights and sounds that make Door County so special. These moments are what make the boat more than just a vessel—it’s a gathering place for family and friends.

Our jet skis also came out for a little fun, though unfortunately, one of them was accidentally run aground. That mishap cut short our time skimming across the water, leaving us with a bigger repair bill than we would have liked. Still, even with fewer jet ski runs, the water offered us plenty to enjoy.

While Brett and the kids were with us, Natalie and her girls spent an afternoon at Hands-On Art Studio, a local gem that lets visitors create their own pottery. Natalie made small, fish-shaped food dishes for our cats, while the girls crafted ice cream bowls—very appropriate, considering the steady flow of ice cream they enjoyed all week.

Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to wander with my camera, capturing the unique beauty of Door County’s landscapes and waterscapes. Photography always helps me slow down and notice the details: shifting light on the bay, the texture of weathered docks, and the charm of small-town streets.

By midweek, Brett and his family had headed home, leaving me with quiet days aboard Take Five. I turned my attention to maintenance projects that always seem to pile up faster than they get finished. There’s a certain satisfaction in tackling those boat tasks alone—part therapy, part necessity.

All too soon, I had to pack up and return home to prepare for another work week. But Natalie and I are already looking forward to returning in September. We’re planning a boating adventure that will take us across the lake to Fayette, Michigan, and then back to Fish Creek, Wisconsin, for several days.

It’s hard to believe the boating season will be winding down by mid-October. For now, though, we’re savoring every chance we get to be out on the water, to explore, and to share these moments with the people we love.

Until next time, Door County—thanks for another week of memories.
