“The firsts go away. First love, first baby, first kiss. You have to create new ones.” — Sarah Jessica Parker
I happened upon this quote on Mother’s Day while perusing a book in the gift shop of Marshfield, Wisconsin’s St. Joseph Hospital entitled Love Life by Kobi Yamada. Parker has the handle on a major truth: we can’t wait on life’s roadside for a limo to stop and take our dreams to their proper destinations. We have to turn our dreams into realities. It’s our job.
Of course, actually doing that is another story. We don’t want to waste precious time and energy failing, especially if we feel the sands of time are running out on us. So what if we do a series of events to further our dreams and none of our efforts seem to payoff? Should we be annoyed with ourselves or fate itself?
Jennifer Aniston has said, “There are no regrets in life, just lessons.” Now that’s what I call a positive attitude! Next to loving others, I think having a positive attitude is what life is all about. You know in your heart of hearts that your present situation could always be worse. Why not light a candle instead of cursing the darkness? Who knows, you might make matters better, no matter how bleak things seem.
As I drive home from the hospital, there is no doubt my life’s dreams are becoming reality. I spent the weekend biking and running, conversing and laughing with wonderful new friends, tasting new wines over dinner, attending the wedding celebration of a young couple in love and experiencing scenic views from the passenger window (above).
